Massdot stream crossing design guide

Back to Project

On behalf of the MassDOT Highway Division, CEI prepared the 2020 Stream Crossing Design Guide. Bridges and culverts affect aquatic and terrestrial wildlife movement along streams and riparian corridors, which in turn potentially affects the viability of wildlife populations and ecological systems.

This Design Guide, which provides an update to the 2010 version prepared by CEI, addresses engineering, stream geomorphology, and ecology considerations to ensure that new and replacement stream crossings accommodate fish and wildlife passage and prevent adverse ecological impacts. It also updates information related to compliance with evolving regulatory standards for stream crossings, including the Massachusetts River and Stream Crossing Standards. New content included a collection of stream crossing design concept plans and information to address design guidance related to climate change and associated infrastructure resiliency.
