downtown peterborough green infrastructure

BACK TO PROJECTS

Project Description

CEI designed drainage, green infrastructure and traffic calming improvements for the Town of Peterborough, NH at the School Street and Grove Street intersection, a highly visible and busy intersection in the heart of the downtown business district. Intersection improvements included narrowing the traveled way and providing a raised “table” to improve pedestrian visibility and safety. In the existing condition, pedestrians waiting within the cross walk were invisible to drivers because they were behind parked cars. By narrowing the lane widths at the intersection, driver cues to slow down were created and pedestrians in the cross walk are now twice as visible. Streetscape and Green infrastructure (GI) features were incorporated in the design to provide storm water pollutant treatment and add green space. GI was constructed at the four corners of the raised table in the form of infiltration planters which are fed by stormwater diverted from the municipal system into the planter’s root areas. Plants and trees absorb excess nutrients in the stormwater before the excess flows on to the downstream Contoocook River.
