In this project for the City of Quincy, MA, CEI worked with a local college, Eastern Nazarene College, to improve the water quality of Sailor's Home Pond, which has an elevated nutrient load. CEI's role in this project was to evaluate the hydrology of the pond and to recommend Best Management Practices related to improving stormwater runoff into the pond. During CEI's investigation, the firm found collapsed sewers leading to Sailors Home Pond. Recommendations were well accepted by residents, and a shore clean up day was held.

Highlights

  • A damaged sewer was found near the pond during the study from a review of the Sewer System Evaluation Survey (SSES) study conducted for the City.

  • Developed a hydrologic budget to determine how much water enters the pond and how much is lost to evaporation and groundwater seepage.

  • Gathered information on costs and effects of potential hydraulic changes.

  • Evaluated existing storm drains to determine whether additional measures can be taken to improve stormwater runoff quality.

  • Developed Best Management Practices at the drainage areas.
