This pond water shows the advanced stages of eutrophication. After a brief assessment, CEI identified the location of a crushed and surcharging sanitary sewer near the inlet using existing TV work from an Infiltration/Inflow study. Additional restoration activities included aeration and removal of Phragmites, an invasive plant.

Water Resources Assessment,
Modeling & Engineering

Many of New England's water resources have become polluted mostly by nutrients over the last 20 years. Excessive aquatic weed growth that interferes with recreation along with algal blooms and noxious odors are some of the symptoms of advanced eutrophication. Fishing, recreation and aesthetics are all usually affected negatively. As water quality becomes more important, point and non-point discharges are increasingly difficult to permit.

CEI's approach to water quality is focused on comprehensive restoration and prioritization of the most important and cost-beneficial steps to improving water quality. We also gravitate towards source controls rather than the "band aid" approach. In comprehensive programs like the development of a Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) or a complex evaluation of piped and overland flows, CEI is expert in modeling and developing restoration strategies. Our multidisciplinary blend of staff is particularly suited to these complex evaluations, and CEI emphasizes the end results and improvements that can be made rather than the sometimes seemingly endless studies. Our services include:
  • Comprehensive watershed management programs including hydrologic and nutrient budgets

  • Investigation of beach closures, public health threats and illicit discharges

  • Baseline and ongoing water quality monitoring and sampling

  • GIS and related services

  • TMDL development

  • Groundwater/surface water interaction modeling and hydrologic, hydraulic and water quality modeling including flood studies

  • Bacteriologic investigations and remediation

  • Capital Improvement Programs

  • Identification and siting of storm drainage and runoff prevention controls

  • Comprehensive restoration approaches including recreational improvements

  • Habitat assessment and improvement, including wetlands restoration

  • Educational workshops and training for watershed groups
