This project involved the roadway rehabilitation of Gardiner Road in Scituate, Massachusetts. The project site consisted of an area of poor roadway grading and lack of appropriate drainage structures resulting in consistent roadway and private property flooding. Additionally, the roadway was in close proximity to a salt marsh resource area prompting water quality and stormwater concerns. CEI developed an engineering plan incorporating deep sump catch basins and flared outlets replacing existing undersized headwalls. Deep sump catch basins were selected for installation to provide for increased stormwater handling capacity and to allow for capture of sediment and other nonpoint source pollutants which settle out of the water column prior to discharge. Additionally, a portion of Gardiner Road upgradient of the proposed structures was regraded and repaved to include curbing to help eliminate private property flooding resulting from roadway sheet flow and to direct stormwater to the newly installed structures. Site constraints, future maintenance needs, and minimizing temporary resource area impacts were considered when developing this project.
