Merrimack is a suburban community of about 25,000 people located between the states' largest cities of Nashua and Manchester. The town has a strong commercial/industrial base but also serves as a bedroom community for the nearby cities and for Massachusetts' cities just across the state's border. Merrimack has a number of potential Brownfields sites, mostly located along its main corridor of commercial/industrial land uses and the town's center.

Several types of recreational facilities are needed in Merrimack, as identified by a recent survey of resident opinions. These include more athletic fields for soccer, baseball and football, along with jogging and bicycle trails. Adding these needed facilities has become problematic in recent years, as there is little available space in or near existing Town-owned properties and little available for purchase at a reasonable price considering the return on investment.

The purpose of this project is to begin putting greenspace, both for conservation and for active and passive recreation, back into the most blighted industrial area of the Town.

Highlights

  • Identification and ranking of sites in Merrimack that are abandoned, idle or under-used industrial/commercial facilities where real or perceived environmental contamination has hampered redevelopment;

  • Assessment and characterization of the environmental contamination at the top ranked sites;

  • Assessment, identification, characterization and planning of future cleanup activities at those sites if warranted by the site assessment/characterization;

  • Performance of the required studies of legal, economic, fiscal, land use, market analysis and other redevelopment issues within planning and/or directing an assessment of future cleanup actions;

  • Expansion of existing public/community involvement activities to obtain community feedback and input on site selection and assessment, characterization and cleanup planning activities;

  • Assessment of reuse options ranged from transfer stations to used for greenspace, as conservation lands for passive recreation/active athletic fields, both of which are in high demand in the community

Elements

  • Local, State and Federal Coordination

  • Public Input

  • Reuse Assessment

  • Site Characterization
